Although advanced skills are required for many jobs, HR professionals are having extreme difficulties recruiting skilled workers. For example, according to a 2013 Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) survey of over 3,400 HR professionals, 55% noted that they had difficulties finding employees with sufficient writing skills.
Certainly, this is concerning. Furthermore, based on data from the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), we estimate that at least 65% of possible job titles require advanced competency in such skills. What does that mean? Simply that moderate preparation is required to enter these occupations (e.g., training in vocational schools, related on-the-job experience, associate’s degree). But how “simple” is it to know what to look for?
Let’s break it down further. O*NET classifies each job title into one of five job zones. A job zone specifies how much education, related experience, and on-the-job training are required to perform the work.
How to Measure Beyond the Basics
To help businesses address these issues, Wonderlic created the Wonderlic Advanced Skills Test – Non-Proctored. This test measures the language and mathematics skills commonly taught in junior high and high school in the United States.
In order to be in tune with the latest methodology as it relates to educational standards, we approached skills measurement with the Common Core State Standards in mind. These standards were written to ensure that people are prepared to enter the modern workforce or two- or four-year college programs. Test scores indicate a person’s preparedness to work successfully with the written materials and/or the quantitative requirements of the job or college curriculum.

The Wonderlic Advanced Skills Test is useful in corporate programs where the company wishes to measure and improve the advanced skills performance of its workforce. The scoring format quickly identifies individuals that could benefit from additional training, and it provides content areas where they might need instruction and practice to reach the requisite skill level for the position. A Topics to Review section provides a listing of questions that were missed at or below the individual’s current skill level, and a Topics to Learn section provides a listing of questions that were missed above the individual’s current skill level.
